OHM

le letture di bioimpedenza del corpo vengono codificate in midi. un sistema algoritmico suona quei dati; il suono che ne risulta è modellato da una catena di processing costruita per il pezzo. bioimpedance readings from the body are encoded as midi. an algorithmic system plays that data; the resulting sound is shaped by a processing chain built for the piece.

il segnale si muove con il respiro, il contatto e la pelle — la partitura non è mai uguale due volte, e non può essere ripetuta. the signal moves with breath, contact and skin — the score is never the same twice, and cannot be repeated.

il corpo non è il soggetto dell’opera. è la sorgente. the body is not the subject of the work. it is the source.

le sculture tubolari di domenico romeo vengono suonate come uno strumento. ho costruito il circuito che le muove: ventole che spingono aria nei tubi, solenoidi che percuotono il metallo, impulsi generati da codice scritto per il pezzo. densità e distribuzione cambiano di continuo, così la sequenza non si ripete mai. domenico romeo’s tubular sculptures are played as an instrument. i built the circuit that drives them: fans pushing air through the tubes, solenoids striking the metal, impulses generated by code written for the piece. density and distribution shift continuously, so the sequence never repeats.

i toni erano già nella scultura. lo strumento è ciò che li rende suonabili. the tones were already in the sculpture. the instrument is what makes them playable.

un esperimento: far girare al contrario un modello di encoding cerebrale per sintetizzare suono. an experiment in running a brain-encoding model backwards to synthesize sound.

tribe v2 di meta (open-weights, non commerciale) predice come la corteccia risponde al suono. io faccio girare il modello al contrario: invece di chiedere cosa fa un suono, chiedo quale suono spingerebbe più forte una regione scelta. meta’s tribe v2 (open-weights, non-commercial) predicts how the cortex responds to sound. i am running the model backwards: instead of asking what a sound does, asking what sound would drive a chosen region hardest.

il metodo è gradient ascent sulla risposta predetta dal modello. quello che ne esce non è uno stimolo di cui sia provata l’attivazione — è un suono che il modello crede la produrrebbe. the method is gradient ascent on the model’s predicted response. what comes out is not a stimulus proven to activate anything — it is a sound the model believes would.
